Thereactions occurring in a $.xed-bed reactor in the temperature runge between150 and 350°C were characterized by chemical analysis of the reactor ej'luentstreum und by measurement of the temperature-time profiles within thecatalyst bed. On nickel catalysts, dioxune showed a runaway reaction withignition at about 190°C (Mozingo, Org. Synth., 21 (1941)). (Ignition isrekrred to as the temperature where the initiation of the runaway reaction isobserved.) Similur reactions were observed with tetruhydrofuran and ethunolover nickel, and with dioxane and ethanol over rhodium and cobalt. Thepredominant reaction was hydrogenolysis und the main products formed weremethune and water.
