Although today’s Li-ion technology hasconquered the portable electronic markets and is still improving, it falls short of meetingthe demands dictated by the powering of both hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehiclesor by the storage of renewable energies (wind, solar). There is room for optimism aslong as we pursue paradigm shifts while keeping in mind the concept of materialssustainability. Some of these concepts, relying on new ways to prepare electrode materialsvia eco-efficient processes, on the use of organic rather than inorganic materials ornew chemistries will be discussed. Achieving these concepts will require the inputs ofmultiple disciplines.2.《Lithium-Air+Battery--Promise+and+Challenges》Abstract:The lithium-air system captured worldwide attention in 2009 as apossible battery for electric vehicle propulsion applications. If successfully developed,this battery could provide an energy source for electric vehicles rivaling that of gasolinein terms of usable energy density.However, there are numerous scientific and technicalchallenges that must be overcome if this alluring promise is to turn into reality. Thefundamental battery chemistry during discharge is thought to be the electrochemicaloxidation of lithium metal at the anode and reduction ofoxygen fromair at the cathode.With aprotic electrolytes, as used in Li-ion batteries, there is some evidence that theprocess canbe reversed by applying an external potential, i.e., that such a battery can beelectrically recharged. This paper summarizes the authors' view of the promise andchallenges facing development of practical Li-air batteries and the current understandingof its chemistry.
