The toxicity and behaviorof graphene in biological systems are thus importantfundamental issues that require signifi cant attention.In this article, the toxicity of graphene is reviewed bydescribing the behavior of graphene and its derivativesin microorganisms, cells, and animals. Despite certaininconsistencies in several detailed experimental resultsand hypotheses of toxicity mechanisms, results fromnumerous reports all agree that the physicochemicalproperties such as surface functional groups, charges,coatings, sizes, and structural defects of graphene mayaffect its in vitro/in vivo behavior as well as its toxicityin biological systems.
